Welcome note

Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends in Europe.

Manual medicine has made significant progress in the last 15 years. This concerns basic research, the understanding of the underlying mechanisms, the evidence of clinical findings and therapy and the mapping in the daily reality of care. It has found broad confirmation in university specialist medicine and enjoys a very good clinical acceptance throughout Europe among patients with pain and functional complaints not only of the musculoskeletal system.

The long-term work of the European Scientific Society of Manual Medicine (ESSOMM) has led to the drafting and publication of the „European Curriculum and Principles of Manual Medicine“, which was published in the European Journal of Manual Medicine in 2022 and can be found on the ESSOMM website. This paper formulates European standards for manual medicine for the first time and has been included in the UEMS (Union Europeenne, des Medecin Specialistes) in the European Training Requirements for Manual Medicine (ETRMM). The work of IAMMM (International Association of Muculosceletal and Manual Medicine) has also made important contributions to the scientific manifestation of manual medicine.

So the idea was obvious to crystallize the current state of research and science, clinic practice of manual medicine in a joint international congress. With about 6000 members, the DGMM (German Society for Manual Medicine) is probably the largest scientific society of its kind in Europe, which has led us to Leipzig with the present pilot project, which is still easily accessible for the Swiss and Austrian societies that are significantly involved.

We hope to arouse your interest with our scientific program and, after years of refraining from personal exchange in the presence of colleagues, we hope to show great interest in coming to Leipzig. We will provide a simultaneous translation of English German and German English as well as the possibility of virtual participation for the plenary contributions and hope to meet all wishes and requirements in this way.

We look forward to welcoming you in Leipzig or in front of your screen.

Sincerely,

Your Hermann Locher

Prof. Dr. med. Hermann Locher, ESSOMM President, DGMM President
